From there it’s on to other zones, be it the level 40 to 50 range Field of the Dead in Cimmeria or further south into Aquilonia’s Wild Lands of Zelata, meant for levels 20 to 37. It seems there’s a little bit of a gap for players in a few spots in the level curve as far as questing zones go, indicating Funcom might intend for those in that range to build themselves up battling dungeon content instead. And, of course, there’s always the grind if you’re so inclined.

Further in, closer to level 30, you’ll pick up more group-oriented quests that focus on combating Ymirish fighters, giants who can absorb an impressive amount of punishment before tumbling to the dirt with any sort of finality. From Conall’s Valley also branches the first major dungeon area, the Spider Caverns, meant for players between levels 28 and 30.

Things here start out simple enough, with a few of the NPCs handing out “kill X number of Y creature” quests that can easily be accomplished solo. Plotlines in the region center around smashing on a brutal faction called the Vanir, who have taken up camp around the zone and are polluting the mountain streams with dead bodies and setting your villages on fire.

You may have noticed the lack of a review for Funcom’s Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures on IGN. It’s not because we’ve been avoiding play time. Since the game launched in the United States on Tuesday, we’ve been slugging our way through its content every day. The simple fact of the matter is games of the massively multiplayer online genre are enormous; they’re meant to be played and enjoyed for years. It’s not exactly a quick, efficient process when trying to decide how to deliver any kind of definitive word.

It seems people have been getting “stuck” there, though just recently Funcom posted an update that reportedly alleviates the problem. Each kingdom has its own zone for gathering resources, something that has to be done if your guild wants to build its own town. We plan on checking out how all that works after finishing up with Conall’s Valley, and will have to wait until we hit level 40 until we can see how the game’s crafting system functions.

Another aspect absent is the ability to inspect the equipment of others. By selecting and right-clicking on a player icon it’s possible to trade, invite to group, and view race, class and level information, but there’s no ability to see what they’re wearing or peruse their feat setup. It’s nothing major, but these kinds of features are always appreciated.

While trying to complete a quest called Mayhem in the Fortress, one of Conall Valley’s higher level challenges, five or six mobs would routinely show up for a fight. With two bear shaman in the party, we managed to breeze through pretty easily, as they fill the role of healers and melee brawlers.

In the starting area, new combos, abilities and spells are unlocked quite frequently, but between 20 and 30 the only skills we seem to be getting are upgraded version of existing ones. It’s not all dull, however, as you can still learn quite a few spells and such from proper feat point allocation. There’s also still quite a long way to go before the 80 cap is reached, so it makes little sense to complain too much about the slowed pace of ability gains as it could very well pick up again.

This can all be done from anywhere in the world, so it’s not like you need to talk to specific trainers or head to a certain zone. After the PvP match has concluded the game returns you to the spot where you accepted the invite, so you can continue on with whatever you were doing beforehand.

We’re on a Player-versus-Environment server right now, which is largely because we didn’t want to get sucked into the insanity of the free-for-all in a PvP sever where anyone can kill anyone. We know some people love that kind of murderous freedom, but it doesn’t exactly mesh well with our need to see as much content as possible.

Should the grind of questing and grinding wear on you, it’s easy to hop into Age of Conan’s Player-versus-Player matches. Clicking on an icon in the screen’s top left opens up a search pane that lets you select a match type and map and apply to a queue. Once in line, it’s been our experience that after a very brief wait you’re transported to an arena where the contest is taking place.

And that’s pretty much it for now. If you’re thinking of picking up the game, we can say it’s at least relatively stable at this point and provides for an enjoyable variety of classes, some beautiful graphics that can be scaled to run well on mid-range systems, and an interesting combat system that, at the very least, proves to feel different from the click-to-auto-attack systems in so many other MMOGs out there. Of course there are some bugs, some NPCs that don’t seem to respond properly, graphical glitches, and some annoyingly long boss mob respawn timers, but we’ve still managed to have a good time so far.

The fugitive system which has yet to make it to Funcom’s Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures live servers and yet has been the topic of much talk among the community. We’ve heard some people complain about it saying that it won’t help, while others have been more positive towards this new feature.

So far, here’s a quick look at how the fugitive system works. Each player gets a certain amount of murder points for killing a character with a lower level. It’s pegged at 100 per kill if I’m not mistaken. Now once you hit 1000 murder points, you become a fugitive.

What does it mean when you become a fugitive? It means that you become a prime target for other players as killing you will not increase the murder points of any character. In addition, you will randomly drop an item each time a player kills you.

Now, it is possible for players to lower their murder points. As of this article’s writing, it is by just simply waiting it out since the murder points drop by a certain number over a span of time or by getting killed.

Theoretically this sounds good, but like all systems, there are ways of breaking it which I’m sure may be painfully obvious to the more experienced MMORPG players out there.

The first, and probably the most glaring exploit in my opinion, would be a group of lowbies teaming up to take down higher leveled characters.

I’m not really sure if the developers have taken this into consideration yet, but a group of lowbies can take out one high leveled character with no fear of retribution. To make matters worse, if the higher leveled character retaliates he or she will be penalized by the system.

The second, and perhaps one that should scare the developers more, is if the community decides to ignore the fugitive system and just go on playing as they normally do. You’ll still end up with a group of fugitives in their 80s ganking people just as badly as when the system was introduced. Only this time, they have a new badge of honor to wear, the fugitive status.

Of course there are more possible ways that the system can be broken, but that’s a story for another time since these are all just theories which will not be explored fully until the PvP Consequence system hits the live servers.

Resolved several issues with the Arena access quest, hopefully it should work correctly this time, and this time we really mean it! (or poor Aquilus might meet with a very unfortunate end if he insists on being so troublesome in the future!)

Altered the loot table of the Beguiler Demons in Potain so they are now dropping more appropriate loot.

The preliminary patch notes for Age of Conan’s August 27 patch have been released. Just like last time, this is pretty long, so just check ‘em out below. Please note, though, that the notes below may not necessarily be included in the final patch release.

GENERAL

Several client crash and assertion error causes were addressed.
The Noble Villas have been optimized. Some players should experience a noticeable increase in performance.
Shield of the Risen will now be given to new characters when they reach level 5.
Facial expressions have been added to a number of emotes.
Female characters can now use the “pointdown” emote.
The following emotes now work for both male and female characters:
cheer, excitedclap, excited (formerly jig_f), flirt, hugefish, lightheaded, pushaway, trance.
Players will now use the crawl animation when sprinting while swimming.
CLASSES

You may now have up to two Team Heal effects (Renewal, Healing Lotus, Emanation of Life, and Martyrdom) running simultaneously.
Priest (General)
Vindicator will now properly affect Soldiers who joined a group in Defensive Stance.
Rogue (General)
Quick Dismount will no longer go on cooldown if used while moving.
Quick Dismount will now work even with weapons drawn.
Using Quick Dismount while riding a mammoth or a rhino will now result in an actual dismount, rather than just an ability cooldown
Assassin
Assassination (2) buff will now properly appear in the Buff GUI instead of the debuff GUI.
All Assassin combo damage and stamina costs have been rebalanced to match some newly adjusted animations.
From the Darkness and Ambush should now occur correctly, when performed from stealth.
Barbarian
Cyclone of Steel II is now usable only with the correct weapon type.
Ambidextrous will now increase off-hand chance by 2%/4%/6%/8%/10% per respective rank.
Conqueror
Rend Flesh’s bleed effect will now stack in the proper order.
Changed the name of the feat ‘Improved Wrath’ to ‘Improved Fire Weave.’
Changed the name of the feat ‘Lingering Wrath’ to ‘Lingering Fire Weave.’
Changed the name of the feat ‘Skirmisher’ to ‘Fleet of Foot.’
Dark Templar
Invulnerable Soul now increases the amount of damage absorbed by Covenant of Invulnerability by 2/4/6/8/10 points per respective rank.
Demonologist
Fires of Gehenna will now have a 1 second cooldown applied to it after using Greater Flames.
Chaotic Blast’s damage component can now perform critical hits.
Guardian
The Defiance heal effect will now use the proper icon in the buff GUI.
Impale combo now has a squelchy fleshy sound when used.
Herald of Xotli
Tweaked the animation played for Pillar of Infernal Flame.
Burn to Death I, Molten Steel Slash I, Pillar of Infernal Flame I now have new icons.
The duration of the Flame Tongue buff has been increased from 8 seconds to 10 seconds.
Necromancer
Blasphemy’s cast time has been reduced to 2 seconds.
Touch of Winter will no longer overwrite Ice Shackle’s snare effect.
Priest of Mitra
Empowered Repulse should also increase the length of the knockbacks by 1 meter for each point.
Holy Conquest’s bonus holy damage on the Devotional Prayer spell will now properly affect teammates.
Channeling spells now use correct amount of mana per tick. Players should no longer be able to cancel spells early and recast them for a reduced mana cost.
Ranger
Cripple and Cripple Enemies now have new icons.
Flesh Ripper and Piercing Shot IV now have new icons.
Leghold Trap should no longer ignore Root Immunity.
Traps should not triggered by corpses anymore.
Tempest of Set
Inner Charge will now properly remove its effect after casting Lightning Strike.
Set’s Life Spark will now wait until you are fully dead before trying to resurrect you.
COMBAT

All Channeling spells now use mana, even if it is a small amount…
The base Immunity chance on all players is now 5%.
The base Immunity cap on all players is now 15%.
Sidestep will now increase the player’s Immunity Cap by 10%.
You can no longer go into hiding while fighting a much lower level NPC.
Fixed a bug where, if your current target went into hiding, you wouldn’t be able to target him again when he reappeared unless you’d targeted something else in the meantime.
Combat transitions for all characters dual-wielding any combination of weapons should now be smoother.
Female polearm users who double tap should see a correct animation.
Charge can no longer be used on non-alive targets.
All weapons should now work correctly with the combos available to that weapon type. (ex. Guardian combo Slaughter).
Combo timers are now adjusted to not time out when the server lags.
The female charge animation has been corrected to not throw the female backwards anymore.
GUI

When shift-clicking a character name in chat, information about that player will be shown in yellow in the same window you clicked in.
Players should no longer see duplicated buff icons for some abilities on their clients.
The modified damage multipler in various tooltips now shows up with percent values, as intended.
Combo and spell tooltips should always display with gray text now.
Maps updated for Tortage Island, Tortage Day, Tortage Night, and the volcano.
You will now see an onscreen message when you cast a targeted spell without a target.
Combos should now show more information about what they are doing. Also, the order in which this information is displayed has been changed.
GUILDS

Fixed some visual issues for player city buildings.
ITEMS

Fixed an issue with tier 5 one handed edged weapons. These can now all be dual wielded.
All vendor-bought resources purchased will appear in the “Bag” tab and not the “Resource” tab of the inventory.
Sacrarial Cabochon Iolite will now give the proper invulnerability bonuses.
Cotton and Cottonwisp can no longer be found on NPCs.
Guardian tier armor wrist and gauntlet pieces will now give bonuses to polearm and 1h weapons.
Fire and Glory spear is no longer tiny.
Loot has been distributed to the new chests in Atzel’s Fortress.
Bloodsire Boots should no longer cause weird ankle animations.
Dark Templar raid armor, such as Gauntlets of Baleful Blood, now only gives bonuses to 1h weapons.
MOUNTS

Mounting rhinos while having your weapons drawn should now work.
NPCS/MOBS

Removed long range bows from NPCs.
Npcs will not try to attack players that have left the playfield anymore.
(Eiglophian Mountains) Chief Uruk’A has dinged, and is now a higher level!
(Imirian Ravine) Blade Champion Krol should now reset properly.
(Imirian Ravine) Deatheater Setmorpok has had his name changed to Deatheater Setkanh.
(Kheshatta) Scorpion Archers should now behave normally, and exit stealth when agroed.
(Kheshatta) Selkhetite Archer spells damage has been changed, and has been nerfed to proper values. They should also no longer bypass damage deflection (Such as PoM Hand of Mitra)
(Scorpion Cave) Scorpion Abomination should now regenerate health less frequently.

You will no longer incorrectly learn a siege camp resurrection point when you are not in a guild.

All members of a murderous group now receive the full penalty, instead of sharing it.
Minigames - You will no longer be able to have different tier players in your team when your team joins a match.

Resource & Gathering: The chance to get rare resources from tier 1 and tier 2 resource nodes has been increased.
Teardrop Amethyst now requires the correct gem, Flawless Amethyst.
WORLD DESIGN

Atzel’s Fortress has been re-textured and re-lit.

All the tier 1 raids are totally broken due to tanks being hit for way too much damage after debuffs have been applied and stacked repeatedly on all the raid tier 1 bosses and in addition, the champion not terminating his low health aoe; yakmarr skipping summoning of his adds and summoning both waves on the wave following the skipped wave; Vistrix not pauseing after casting her stun giveing enough time for a bane from a healer or caster before casting her flame aoe and sometimes casting it twice back to back. In my opinion from my experience of raiding as a 80 ranger since launch and being one of the raidleaders of one of the top raiding guilds on dagoth that yes the gems should have been nerfed but 1/3rd or possibly half of what was done in the gem nerf patch. Yet most of Tier 2 was made easier except for the gargoyle master which is also near impossible to kill. As for any of the tier 1 raid bosses currently don’t expect to take 2/4 down without exploiting. And as for kylikki and the champion they are nearly impossible to kill legitly now.

You won’t land any video game tester jobs if you just sit around and wait for a “Game Testers Wanted” ad to appear in the paper. It won’t happen. So instead of sitting back and waiting for a miracle to occur, just get out there and find the perfect video game testing job for you. I used to be fairly conservative, only fighting when I had to and grouping whenever possible, but now that I’ve followed my leveling guide I don’t need to be a wuss anymore. I went from level 9 to level 61 really fast (faster than any of my friends who were the same level), and I didn’t play any more than I normally would.

A battleground can be totally chaotic with dropships appearing out of nowhere, zapping down Bane troops. You can run away or push yourself further and take the advantage of the situation and earn some leveling points. Leveling in MMORPGs is usually one of the slowest, time consuming aspects of the games.

I’ve about give up on this game. I haven’t even played it yet and I’m frustrated to no end.

Lets go through the list of things that happened. Mind you this is before I even can open the client correctly.

1) Installed it and I get an error saying that “winhttp.dll could not be found, reinstall”. I search for a fix to no avail so I just reinstall it. This didn’t fix the error. Thanks to someone on here, i downloaded the winhttp.dll and shoved it in my system32 folder.

2) after doing that, it “worked”. The error wouldnt pop up and the download manager would appearently be “open” according to the taskbar. Googled and got no fix. I finally got it to work while fiddling with the task manager.

3) Finally, the update manager thing comes up and starts loading. I get excited that I will finally get to freaking play. About halfway into the DL, it crashes with the BS “sry we messed, tell funcom wut happened lol” error. I reopen to see if it might fix itself but same thing happens. I found no other people on both Gamefaqs or the AoC forums that have the same problem or maybe a fix.

The game launched at 9 p.m. (GMT) on May 17, 2008 in a limited way, being available to those who had pre-ordered the game and registered for early access. The full release of the game for North America was May 20, 2008 and for Europe May 23, 2008 for the PC version. The Xbox 360 version is scheduled to be released a year after the PC release.

Hyborian Adventures is the first installment in the planned Age of Conan series. Age of Conan itself takes place within the continent of the Hyborian kingdoms, a year after the events depicted in Howard's sole Conan novel, The Hour of the Dragon. Hyborian Adventures' release celebrated the 76th anniversary of the Conan franchise.
