AoC PvP System Status

We are currently working through the intended progression for the new PvP system. How fast should it be for players to progress? At what levels should the rewards come? How long do we want it to take a player to get the first level? How long should it take to reach the maximum level and how much should we balance between the ‘hardcore’ player and the more casual player. This is being worked on through tests and through taking data from all the live servers and examining people’s PVP habits. It is important for us to be basing our progression decisions on real information and player feedback so that we don’t pitch it too high or too low.

So what’s currently being tested? One of the core feature of the PvP update is the new Notoriety System (formerly known as the “fugitive system”) which is being implemented to discourage some of the more anti-social elements of a PVP environment (Remember we want PVP to be as fun as possible for as many people as possible). This area obviously requires that we test a lot of very different scenarios to test the robustness of rules applied to give the system an automatic way to ‘detect’ activity directly and flag the player character according to predefined rules.

These are just a few examples of topics that need to be tested and tweaked and then again be tested and maybe get tweaked some more. This process is obviously taking additional time as we want to ensure that the system will work as well as it can before we consider introducing it to the live servers. While we understand that everyone would love to have the new system as soon as possible, we also feel that it is important that system works on all the levels we would like it to before we release it to live. Yes, it has taken us longer than we first expected, but we hope everyone understands that the system will be better for the additional testing.

This being said, I invite everyone to come join us on our test servers and see for yourself how the PvP consequence system and other changes are shaping up. There are still a few things to tweak and adjust, especially as more players give their valuable feedback on it. The update is definitely getting closer and closer to being ready for live, and we really hope that everyone appreciates the reasons why we feel the extra time spent is worthwhile.

A number of options are available to players so that they may eventually remove themselves from an unfavorable PvP situation:
Players are granted temporary immunity to damage when spawning and when zoning into new areas. This immunity lasts for 20 seconds or until the player enters combat mode.
Players may choose to respawn at another location in their current zone if one is available.
Players may use their Path of Asura to return to their bind point at a non-PvP city hub. The casting time for this ability is greatly reduced while the Shild of the Risen buff is active.
Players may change to another instance of their current zone if one is available.

Should the existing mechanics fail or be circumvented then a GM or Volunteer may intervene. If you find that you do not enjoy the dynamic gameplay that a PvP environment provides, we have several PvE and RP-PvE servers to choose from.

Fans of the Age of Conan role-player game besieged internet forums with complaints after noticing that their custom-built characters had dropped several bra sizes.

Many were angry that their previously pert avatars - which they had spent hours creating into icons of exaggerated femininity - now appeared to have “saggy” breasts.

Some players even threatened to withdraw their subscriptions to the online game, claiming that the Norwegian makers Funcom were censoring their buxom characters.

“If this isn’t fixed in a reasonable amount of time, ie a day or two, I will be un-subscribing,” one player, calling himself Dusk, wrote on the game’s official forum.

Multi-player fantasy games like Age of Conan are particularly popular among teenage boys, but even some of the game’s female players were upset at the unannounced change.

“Funcom did reduce the size of the breasts. There is almost no cleavage, just a flat area between them. And YES they do sag,” a player called Krystal wrote.

Amid growing anger at the sudden change in the game, which was only launched last month, Funcom decided to act.

In a message posted on a gamers’ forum, it said that the maximum breast size had been reduced in error during a programming alteration carried out to fix other bugs.

It also promised that all affected characters would soon be re-enlarged

“Funcom can confirm that some of the female models in the game have had the size of their breasts changed,” the statement said.

“This is due to an unintended change in data that was introduced in an earlier patch, data which controls the so-called morph values associated with character models and the size of their respective body parts.

“We are working on a fix for this and your breasts should be back to normal soon.”

A Funcom spokesman said today that a patch correcting the problem was sent out to players on Monday, and everything should now be working normally.

Age of Conan was touted as a “next generation” multiplayer role play game ahead of its release on PC last month.

Players pay around £7.50 ($15) a month to explore the “Hyborian kingdoms”, fighting other gamers and completing tasks. More than one million copies of the game were sold worldwide within three weeks of its release.

GameRiot.com cites the following as reasons why Conan’s stock has plummeted and that these reflect a lack of investor confidence in the longevity of the game:

Stockholders Have Had Enough
Funcom Forum Coverups Lead To Mistrust

Female Swing Speed Discrepancy
Account Billing Beyond Cancellation
Server Consolidations
Questions About New Content
Funcom is Desperate
Flaming Out On Xfire
In fairness, and as someone who occasionally dabbles in the stock market, this appears more like a stock that benefited in the short term from Age of Conan’s release and is now returning to ‘normal’ (though I’m sure developers and Funcom execs would love to see the stocks level out at $50 per share!). However, there is something to be said for the legion problems that occurred on release and in the following months.

Is it a correction? A lack of confidence? Or is it somewhere in between?

There are multiple tiers of resources for every trade. To advance in each you need to finish the appropriate quest from the harvesting trainers. For example, starting off in stonecutting, you can mine sandstone, after completing Sandstone (and quartz) you can now mine granite, then basalt and so on. As you advance in the harvesting tiers you can still harvest those tiers under you.

There are also special items that you can find in Resource nodes. Clear quartz from Sandstone, Black Silver from Silver. These are rare and occur by chance from one of the nodes. I’m not sure exactly what the chance is but I believe its around 1%. These ‘Gems’ as I refer to them will be the biggest limiting step for resource gatherers. You can literally spend hours running around to nodes and NOT get one. I expect that in the future they will up the rate of these, but till then, expect some frustration.

Key Strategy: The Harvesting of a rare item from a node takes 20% off the node (not like the usual 10% from a regular resource). So if you find a node that is under 20% health, there is a 0% chance of getting a rare. Remember this as your working your way up.

Key Point: Rare Resources are deposited directly into your Resource inventory. If there is NO space in your inventory for another resource it will drop on the ground as a Loot Bag. REMEMBER TO LOOT IT. A lot of people forget.

Resource Tier chart
Minor Prospector Weaver Stonecutter Woodcutter Skinner
Tier 1  Copper  Silver  Cotton Sandstone Ash Rough Leather
Tier 1b  Tin Black Silver  Cottonwhisp Clear Quartz  Black Ash  Brindled Leather
Tier 2  Iron Electrum Silk Granite Yew Calloused Leather
Tier 2b  Aurichalcum Illustrium Tussah Silk  Felspar Amberwood Grained Leather
Tier 3  Duskmetal Gold Ironsilk Basalt Oak Gnarled Leather
Tier 3b  Blue Iron
 Platinum  Gossamer Silk
 Adamant Soulwood
 Whorled Leather

There are more resources above tier 5. As I get more info I will be adding to this list. There are level limits as to which tier you will be able to harvest. Level 20 you will be able to get quests for tier 1. At level 50 you can get the quests for Tier 2. At level 70 you get the tier 3 quests.

Key for Tier 1 Skinning: Kill bears and dark beasts in wild lands, they have a pretty high drop rate for rough leather.

Key for Tier 2 Skinning: Kill apes in the Eiglophian Mountains. They have a very high drop rate for calloused leather.

Key For Tier 3 Skinning: Kill mammoths in Atzel’s Approach. They have a high drop rate for Gnarled Leather

Key for tier 2 and 3 Weavers: Hit the repeatable Villa quests in the Noble’s district. Guards there drop plenty of silk.

Players all over Hyboria have been waiting for an update on the new PvP mechanics that will soon be implemented on live servers. Today Funcom US Community Manager Glen “Famine” Swan posted an update on the official forums inviting players to give the system a try on test live. He also opened up a discussion thread to allow players to discuss the system and offer feedback to aid the developers in tweaking things for live.

Greetings,

Many of you have been asking about the status of the PvP Update and when it will be made available on the live servers so I wanted to bring you all an update today on just that. With PvP combat being such an integral part of the game we feel it is important that the new PvP systems are as robust as possible when they are released to the live dimensions. That means a lot of testing to pull, prod and poke the new rulesets to see where they might not quite be up to the job. It is very important to us that the system works well to maximize people’s enjoyment and try to avoid having to change too many things after it goes live.

How many levels lower must a killed target be to justify it as a “lowbie kill” and add ‘murder points’ to the killers account? How do we handle the various situations where players may try and deliberately get someone flagged as a criminal through no fault of their own? Testing these scenarios takes a deal of time, and quite a lot of rulesets to be implemented in the code. While many are already in place we are working through and improving them and making sure they are as flexible as possible before they go on the live servers.

The biggest joke of it all is the siege wars. They sounded very open and fun at first, until you actually read about them. The owner of the battlekeep sets up a timeframe they can be attacked, so they are usually safe. Opposing guilds sign up to siege the battlekeep so everyone knows who is going to attack and when, not very realistic. The idea of coming part way through and joining in the mayhem is also not going to happen. The battlekeep has a player limit and becomes instanced off. If you do manage to get inside, you have to do little objectives and whichever guild has the most points wins. It isn’t at all what was expected. Many expected to knock a hole in the wall with their trebuchets and storm in killing everyone in their path. The battlekeep would be conquered when all defenders were dead. While that sounds incredibly fun, it is the opposite Funcom is taking the game. The worst part of it all is if multiple guilds sign up to siege a battlekeep, the one with the most PvP points gets to siege it. Where do you get these points? A main source of them is from the PvP mini-games. Wait, are you saying I need to play PvP mini-games to build up points? Sounds like something straight out “the other game.”

Age of Conan contains amazing graphics, a revolutionary combat system, siege wars! Doesn’t this sound like a surefire success? Well it would be, if any of that was true. The graphics are pretty amazing, if you can afford a computer capable of running it. Even players on top of the line computers are having extreme difficulty running it, even with the visual settings turned all the way down. The models are very human-like but they are missing the same little things that make them look like dolls that every game messes up. Texture issues make some of the model’s hair look like a wig and shine way too much. I guess the graphics are good if you can afford to run them and can stand playing as a doll.

The way they advertise the revolutionary combat system is a complete joke. All it adds is the ability to aim your strike. You can stab, backhand, slice, chop downwards but it’s not what they make it out to be. The combos don’t flow like I expected from this “revolutionary” combat system. You aren’t slicing left then coming right back with the backhand swing into the overhead chop. The dodging and blocking is the same system, slightly delayed and few options. The combat system is decent but not even close to what the AoC fanboys are claiming.

About Age of Conan

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures is a fantasy-themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by the Norwegian computer, video game developer company Funcom for PC and the Xbox 360. The game launched at 9 p.m. (GMT) on May 17, 2008 in a limited way, being available to those who had pre-ordered the game and registered for early access. The full release of the game for North America was May 20, 2008 and for Europe May 23, 2008 for the PC version. The Xbox 360 version is scheduled to be released a year after the PC release.

Hyborian Adventures is the first installment in the planned Age of Conan series. Age of Conan itself takes place within the continent of the Hyborian kingdoms, a year after the events depicted in Howard's sole Conan novel, The Hour of the Dragon. Hyborian Adventures' release celebrated the 76th anniversary of the Conan franchise.
